Beaches in Crete
Summer in Greece is all about enjoying the two things that make travellers love our country; the sun and the sea! The island of Crete and the Heraklion region can easily be included into the top holiday destinations in the Mediterranean simply because it offers those two summer elements and maybe more.

A general note before we wear our swimsuits! The beaches in Crete & the north side of Heraklion and closer to the Galaxy Hotel are organized, have crystal clear waters and are ideal for all sorts of visitors. At the southern part though the beaches are less crowded which makes them ideal for the adventurers and the people seeking for tranquillity. We divided the beaches in Crete according to the distances from the Galaxy Hotel and the city of Heraklion and today we are exploring the beaches that are 30 kilometres away from Heraklion city.
Beaches close to the city of Heraklion (up to 30 km./ 30 minutes’ drive)
Beaches in Crete : East Side
Akti: If you prefer to start exploring the northeast side of Heraklion then after 7 klm from the city, you find the beautiful and well organized beach of Akti. The beach is reachable by bus from the city and there, you will find sun loungers, beach bars, restaurants and cafes for all sorts of tastes and summer quests!
Kokkini Chani: We stay east and moving on to the cosmopolitan beach of Kokkini Chani; a beach to be for young people of all ages, a summer spot for beach parties and all day summer fun under the sun! The crystal clear waters and the great organization will make you appreciate this beach if you are the summer party seeker type of visitor!
Chersonissos: This is among the most popular beaches in Crete and Greece. It a long beach with sand and crystal clear waters. However, you have probably heard of Chersonissos due to the vibrant nightlife and the parties. Chersonissos though has parts that are quite where you can enjoy the sea and the sun undisturbed. Close to Chersonissos, there is the calm beache of Limanakia (1 km away), whereas at Limenas scuba divers find their favourite beach for their favourite sport.
History tip: The natural port of Chersonissos was the port of the ancient city Lyttos.
Stalida: Reaching our limit to 30 klm from Heraklion city and the Galaxy Hotel is the beach of Stalida. Another sandy beach where is lovely when it’s not windy.
Beaches in Crete : West Side
Ammoudara: We are now going west and the first beach we meet is this long, sandy beach awarded with an EU Blue Flag just 5 klm. from the Heraklion city. The beach is fully organized and can be reached even by bus starting from the city. People of all ages are preferring the beach of Ammoudara in Heraklion to relax and enjoy the sun and the hot waters of the sea, whereas for water sports there is facilities for windsurfing!
Palaiokastro: We are now starting going further from the city centre and we make a quick dive at the deep waters of the pebbled Palaiokastro beach found 18 klm. from the Galaxy Hotel at the west side of Heraklion city.
Agia Pelagia: The protected from the winds beach of Agia Pelagia, the beach organization with bars and taverns and the clear sea are making this beach a quite popular summer destination for the visitors of Heraklion. It is 24 klm northwest from the city and there are other smallest beaches nearby like Mononautis, Made and Lygaria.
Fodele: We are finishing our journey to the west beaches of Heraklion prefecture with a stop to the beach of Fodele. Visit the village of Fodele where the famous Cretan painter El Greco was born and enjoy a stroll to this picturesque village with many churches, the trees and the river. Then head to the beach, where the green of the trees reaches to the shore and enjoy swimming in the turquoise waters of Fodele beach. You will also find beach bars, restaurants and cafes!
