The city of Heraklion always had a significant part to the island’s social, political and cultural life. The many phases of its rich history along with the many different people who lived in the city throughout the centuries have left their architectural and artistic marks all over the city of Heraklion. Today we will take you for a long walk to the city’s not-to- miss spots and the places that combine beautiful landmarks with choices for a stop for coffee or a delicious meal.
The Medieval City Walls. Let’s go to the Venetian castle and its walls which are among the longest in Europe. It was built by the Venetians but there were a lot of additions and alterations by the Ottomans. The name kept, Koules, was given to the castle by the Ottomans. Walk around and witness the beauty along with the secrets of one of Heraklion city’s main attractions!
The 25th August Street. A massive massacre on the 25th August in 1898 gave the name to Heraklion’s city main district. This car free road is where you will admire the city’s gratitude as you are walking through buildings of unique architecture, shops and cafes. Stop at the Saint Titus’ Cathedral, the building of Loggia and the church of Saint Mark.
The Lion Square. This is probably the most famous spot in the city of Heraklion. Locals and tourists meet in this beautiful square with the cafes and the impressive fountain. Close to the Lion Square is Handakos Street, an ideal road for shopping.
The Market. Fresh fish, cheese and local products are sold daily at the Heraklion city central market. Visit the market to admire the true colours and tastes of Crete. Enjoy walking through the benches and have a bite at the small, traditional taverns. At the top of the market, in Kornarou Square, you will see the Bembo Fountain.
The Freedom Square. The Plateia Eleftherias is our last hot spot in Heraklion city. Here you will walk at the neighbouring park or you will have a cold or hot coffee at the cafes. You can also visit the Archaeological Museum and pass the Saint George’s Gate to wonder around the castle.
